DOT Exams Q & A

What is a DOT exam?

Commercial transportation of people and goods is an essential part of the American lifestyle. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires drivers of commercial vehicles to obtain a Department of Transportation (DOT) exam to ensure they are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to safely perform their job duties.

There are guidelines for who needs to have a DOT exam, including:

  • Drivers of vehicles that carry more than 15 people
  • Drivers who are paid to transport more than 8 people
  • Drivers who transport hazardous materials
  • Drivers of vehicles that weigh more than 10,000 pounds

Your employer will let you know if a DOT exam is required for your position.

What should I expect during my DOT exam?

Many aspects of your DOT exam are similar to what happens during routine annual exams. Expect a discussion of your personal and family health history, and be prepared to share the details of any medication or supplements you’re taking.

Some of the other areas Kimberly will check during your DOT exam include:

  • Heart
  • Mouth and throat
  • Back and spine
  • Nervous system
  • Lungs and chest
  • Eyes
  • Ears
  • Extremities

Depending on the requirements of your employer, you may need to provide a urine sample for analysis. That screening checks for the presence of illegal substances. Urinalysis also looks for signs of blood, sugar, or proteins in your urine, all of which can indicate serious health issues.

What happens if I “fail” my DOT exam?

It can be very disappointing to find that the results of your DOT exam are not what you had hoped. However, a degree of perspective is important in these circumstances.

If Kimberly and her team found areas of concern during your DOT exam, that information empowers you to take control of your health and wellness. Early detection is critical in treating many serious conditions.

Signs of chronic health conditions, like diabetes or hypertension, do not mean that you’ll never be able to work in the industry of your choice. These diseases can be managed, and your condition can improve with proper care and lifestyle modifications.

Nothing is more important than your health. If you “fail” your DOT exam, Kimberly will discuss treatment options that can help you feel and function your very best. Once your condition improves, you may be able to have a new DOT exam performed and move forward in your chosen career.

To book a DOT exam, spend a few moments on the online scheduling page. You’re also welcome to call and check appointment availability.
